Thai Culture : Festivals and Events

1. Chiang Mai Flower Festival : เทศกาลดอกไม้เชียงใหม่



            The festival is held in Nong Buak Hat Park, at the foot of Nawarat Bridge and Khuang Pratu Tha Pae area. The highlight of the festival is the car parade of which each car is colourfully decorated with flowers at their best to win the competition. The street along the parade is decorated with plants and flowers, an ideal for photo hunters. Flower exhibition, beauty pageant, local product stalls are included in the festival as well as music performance to entertain the audience.




2. Yi Peng Festival. : งานประเพณียี่เป็ง






                   Yee Peng is tha annual festival held to celebrate the fulll moon in the northern capital of Chiang Mai on the day preceding Loy Krathong by one day in November.The word "Yee Peng" is the northern Thai term referring to the full moon of the 12 th lunar month in the Buddhist calendar.








3. Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchathani Thailand : เทศกาลเทียนในอุบลราชธานีประเทศไทย



                In Ubon Ratchathani, 629 km northeast of Bangkok, the Candle Festival is the province's most popular annual event. On the days before the event, the local authorities will be busy preparing the venue at Thung Si Muang, a public field, similar to Bangkok's Sanam Luang. At the same time, local artisans make ornately carved beeswax candles of various sizes and shapes. On the day of the festival, the fabulous candles are paraded around the town on colorful floats, accompanied by displays of religious devotion. After the procession, they are presented to local temples.








4. Bun Bang Fai, Rocket Festival in Yasothon Province : เทศกาลบุญบั้งไฟจังหวัดยโสธร


                  Yasathon Province has long been known for its longstanding Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival which is annually held as a belief that it will bring plenty of rain for the rice planting season. The highlight, which is certainly a spectacular scene, is when the colourful home-made rockets are launched into the sky. The event features firework displays, parades, beauty contest, cheer squad competition, and various cultural shows.






5. Hot air balloons on show in Pattaya : การแสดงบอลลูนอากาศร้อนในพัทยา




                         BANGKOK, 12 January 2011 – Sport Flying Association (Thailand) partners with Singha Corporation and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to host the Pattaya International Balloon Fiesta 2011, this week, at the Thammasat University, Pattaya campus, Chon Buri province.
                          Visitors can enjoy watching internationally recognised hot-air balloons in the sky near Pattaya. The teams represent 10 countries – USA , UK, Netherlands, France, India, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand.
                          The 4th edition of the balloon festival also  features various demonstrations of extreme sports such as Paramotor, Parachuting, remote controlled model planes, motorcycle stunts and giant kite flying.
                           The balloon festival is sponsored by TAT and Pattaya City. It is an annual event which held at  the same venue every year. However, the 4th edition was postponed from late December 2010 to January 2011 due to organisational hitches.

6. Phuket Vegetarian Festival : ประเพณีถือศิลกินผัก (กินเจ) จังหวัดภูเก็ต


                   The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite.








7. Chinese New Year in Bangkok : เทศกาลตรุษจีนในกรุงเทพฯ


             As the greatest event for Chinese descendants, annually they come together to celebrate the arrival of their New Year at China Town. Enjoy a variety of spectacular Thai-Chinese cultural performances like Chinese Opera, Thai Dancing, Puppet Show, Dragon Dance, and many more. The “Worshipping at 8 Shrines” is believed to bring good luck. Plenty of appetizing traditional Chinese dishes can be found along the road.


8. Phitakhon Festival : งานผีตาโขน จังหวัดเลย




                
                  Phi Ta Khon is a type of masked procession celebrated on the first day of a three-day Buddhist merit-making holiday known in Thai as "Boon Pra Wate". The annual festival takes place in May, June or July at a small town of Dan Sai in the northeastern province of Loei. Participants of the festival dress up like ghosts and monsters wearing huge masks made carved coconut-tree trunks, topped with a wicker-work sticky-rice steamer. The procession is marked by a lot of music and dancing.






9.Songkran Festival : เทศกาลสงกรานต์



                              
                              Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city.
                             Songkran is a Thai word which means "move" or "change place" as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.
                             The Songkran tradition is recognized as a valuable custom for the Thai community, society and religions. The value for family is to provide the opportunity for family members to gather in order to express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them gifts including making merits to dedicate the result to their ancestors. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity.
                              The value for community is to provide the opportunity to create unity in the community such as to jointly acquire merits, to meet each other and to enjoy the entertaining events. And for the society value is to create concern upon environment with cooperation such as to clean houses, temples, public places and official buildings. Thai value the religion bye means of merits acquisition, offerings alms to monks, Drama Practice, listen.  In the afternoon, after performing a bathing rite for Buddha images and the monks, the celebrants both young and old, joyfully splash water on each other. The most-talked about celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival, to watch the Miss Songkran Contest and the beautiful parades.  In Bangkok, the Buddha image "Buddhasihing" is brought out from the National .


10. Surin Elephant Round-up : งานช้างจังหวัดสุรินทร์



                       One of the most exciting spectacles of the year in Thailand. Surin, in the northeast of the country, known as the province of elephants, has long been associated with elephants. The people here are well known for their skills in rounding up wild elephants, training and taming them. Every year, more than one hundred elephants take part in the festival, displaying their grace, strength and intelligence in games of soccer, log carrying and tug-of-war, and the highlight of the festival, a dramatic mock battle. The festival tour also takes you to the old capital of Siam, Ayutthaya, and allows you to spend a day at an elephant centre learning the skills of the elephant mahouts.








11. The River Kwai Bridge Week : สัปดาห์สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแคว




                      Each year in late November to early December, the world famous River Kwae Bridge built by Allied prisoners-of-war during World War II , becomes the focal point of celebrations. Event highlights include historical and archaeological exhibits, a carnival, folk and cultural performances, rides on World War II vintage trains, and a spectacular light and sound presentation re-enacting the bridge's World War II legacy.










12. Hat Yai Lantern Festival : เทศกาลโคมไฟหาดใหญ่


                 
                      
The lantern festival in Hat Yai is divided into 7 categories: Amazing Small World, Amazing Floating Lantern, Amazing Animal Planet, Amazing Lantern of the East, Amazing Chinese Lantern, Amazing Bird Paradise and Amazing Sculpture Lantern. The exhibits are both Thai and international. There are also cultural performances.


13. Muay Thai Festival in Ayutthaya : เทศกาลมวยไทย จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา



                        The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) together with Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province,the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Administrative Organization, and the Association Institute of Thai Martial Arts will organize “The World Thai Martial Arts Festival and Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony 2012” between 17-23 March 2012, at Nai Khanom Tom Monument, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Stadium.
                        This festival aims to preserve Thai martial arts and self-defense and is a tribute to Nai Khanom Tom, who is highly regarded as a Muay Thai folk hero.




14.  Loi Krathoong Festival : เทศกาลลอยกระทง


                   As the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (usually in mid-November) lights up the night sky, throughout the Thai kingdom, hundreds of thousands of ornately-decorated krathong or traditional banana leaf floats are set adrift in rivers and waterways in a spell-binding ritual called "Loi Krathong" - the 'festival of lights". This is one of the Kingdom's oldest and best-preserved traditions.




15. Phimai Festival : งานเทศกาลเที่ยวพิมาย


                   An annual festival held for more than a century, the traditional long-boat races draw thousands of visitors from all over. This event is further enhanced by a light and sound presentation at Prasat Hin Phimai, local art and cultural performances, various fun-filled competitions, and sales of local products and exhibitions.





16. Monkey Buffet Festival : เทศกาลโต๊ะจีนลิง จังหวัดลพบุรี



                        The "Lopburi Monkey Festival" is held annually on the last weekend of November. The Macaque monkeys are offered a buffet of scrumptious fruits and sweets, ice cream, and more as a way of thanking them for the prosperity they bring to the town.





17. Benjamas Ban Nai Marn Mok Festival : เทศกาลดอกเบญมาศบานในม่านหมอก




             The event is held to promote the tourism of Amphoe Wang Nam Kheo, or known as “Switzerland of Northeastern Thailand” with its pure ozone and exquisite landscape. Besides seeing the gorgeous Benjamas or Chrysanthemum in bloom, there is also Benjamas Gardening Contest, flower arbor contest, exhibition, OTOP product and toxin-free vegetable fairs.



18. Turtle Releasing Festival : เทศกาลปล่อยเต่า


              The Turtle Releasing Festival is annually held in March. The aim is to release the baby turtles back to the sea after being raised by the Fisheries Department. Guests can witness diverse types of new born turtles like hawksbill turtles and green sea turtles walking down to their natural home. Features include parade and exhibitions about aquamarine life and sea turtles, OTOP product fair, local sport competitions, and stage performances.



19.  Pattaya International Music Festival : เทศกาลดนตรีนานาชาติพัทยา


            The Tourism Authority of Thailand in conjunction with Pattaya City Hall and Thailand’s biggest music labels are bringing together leading music acts from around the world and Thailand to provide the biggest music experience of the year in South East Asia. 
           The Pattaya International Music Festival has grown with every year and this year the organizers are guaranteeing a much bigger and better musical experience. The long weekend of great music will see the complete shutdown of Beach Road as various stages are set up around town and the streets are filled with merchants, food vendors, games and ample dance area’s with the latest in lighting and sound, eaturing some of Asia’s best DJ’s.



20.  Thailand International Kite Festival : เทศกาลว่าวไทยเเละว่าวนานาชาติ



                   Kite flying is a popular world sport that has evolved over the decades. The use of modern materials and new technology has led to the emergence of bigger kites with more impressive structures. These new developments have made it possible to create a great variety of forms and structures and given rise to new methods of flying kites, all of which combine to create an awesome spectacle for the audience. See the sky adorned with a variety of shapes and vivid colours of more than 100 kites from 23 countries around the world. There are also Thai kite exhibition, acrobatic performance, satellite kite from Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, radio-control small plane, parachute performance and many more.



22.  Poi Sang Long Festival : เทศกาลปอยส่างลอง



                 Poi Sang Long is a ceremony practiced amongst Tai Yai people to ordain boys into Buddhist novices in order to study Buddhist doctrines. On the first day, the boys’ s hair is shaved except for the eyebrows, beautified by colourful clothes, makeup and flowers and brought to pay respect and apologise the elderly for any wrongdoings they might have done. On the second day, they are carried on the horse back or a person’s shoulders in a procession along the street accompanied by people in the village. The third day, they are again brought in a procession along the street to the temple to start the ordainment.




23. Wan Lai Festival Pattaya : เทศกาลวันไหล พัทยา


             Pattaya Wan Lai Festival is a popular village of Pattaya and the other parties to the present day. Wan Lai Pattaya Festival. Regarded as a traditional links and is part of the Songkran festival on the flow because Pattaya is popular place during the April 19 of each year, Songkran Festival in the central region. Will be played during the April 13-14-15. In the east, it hits different from the other player is going to start throwing water at each other about 16, or 17-18-19, April, called “Wan Lai” itself.



24. Krabi Rock & Fire International Contest : การแข่งปีนผาและควงไฟนานาชาติ




                       This festival is one of the best activities for the year of Krabi province at Railay Beach and Ton Sai Beach to promote and publicize rock climbing activity in Krabi as well as presenting Krabi Rock Climbing Destination where mountaineers love to climb because it is the top world of beautiful cliff which provides tourism facilities.



25. Rayong Funky Fruit Festival : เทศกาลสีสันราย๊อง

                  Rayong is heaven for fruit lovers. During the festival, you can enjoy the sight, the taste and some spending on the quality tropical fruits of Thailand. There are also fruit procession, Miss Fruit Orchard beauty pageant, fruit eating competition, fruit basket arrangement competition, papaya salad cooking contest and cultural performances. More than top 30 restaurants in the province as well as fruit farmers present their best products in the festival.




26.  Hua Hin Jazz Festival  : เทศกาลดนตรีแจ๊สหัวหิน


                  The spectacular Hua Hin Jazz Festival is annually held in one of the most desirable locations, along the shimmering white sandy beach of Hua Hin. Enjoy a myriad of first-rate performances from the brilliantly gifted artists from Thailand and all over the world. And with its superb venue, guests can take advantage of the stunning seaside scenery whilst listening to a wide variety of quality Jazz music.




27. Dok Krachiao Blooming Festival : เทศกาลดอกกระเจียวบาน


                      Witness the beauty of the pinkish-purple Siam Tulip, or "Dok Krachiao" when they come into full bloom each year. Diverse features comprise the spectacular Dok Krachiao parade, music performances, and charity walking rally. Included programmes are also local art and craft demonstrations, and OTOP product fair. Nearby attractions are the extraordinary 'Rock Garden', Pha Eang Waterfalls, and Tum Kaew Caves.




28.  Thong Pha Phum Fruit Festival : เทศกาลผลไม้ทองผาภูมิ





              
                  Exhibition of famous Thong Pha Poom agricultural, produce such as rambutan and durian, tasting and purchase of fruit directly from the farm, fruit competition, cooking of local desserts such as Karen Thong Yo, classical Karen play, Ram Tong and other local perforamnces; sale of delicious local rambutan, durian, pomelo, longan and mangosteen, tourist attraction exhibition and various shows perform by local people. Prized will be given to winners of competitions and certificates will be offered to fruit orchardists. This is an opportunity to enjoy a charming mountainous atmosphere.




29. Kaeng Hin Peung Rafting Festival  : เทศกาลล่องแก่งหินเพิง


                   Rafting on Gaeng Hin Pheung can be done as far as 2.5 km at 6 rapids. There are rafting competition, Pétanque competition, traditional dance performances, OTOP products booths, religious ceremony and candle wax parade, singing and musical performances.



30. Phetchabun Sweet Tamarind Fair : งานเพชรบูรณ์มะขามหวาน



                 Sweet tamarind is grown mostly in Phetchabun. Sweet Tamarind Fair is thus organised in Phetchabun to celebrate the harvest of this fruit. This day is also called Phetchabun’s Agricultural Day. During the festival, farmers bring their sweet tamarind to sell at reasonable price at Phetchabun’s provincial athletic field where contests of sweet tamarind and other crops are held. Besides this, there are other agricultural exhibitions and entertainment organised during the event.





31. Trang Roast Pork Festival : เทศกาลหมูย่างเมืองตรัง



                    Trang Roast Pork Festival is a tourism promotion activity of Trang, held every September. 
The festival features Trang roast pork is of a special recipe. The pork skin is crispy, the meat is tender and it is delicious due to a process by which the pig is fermented with herbs then roasted whole on a specially made grill. Trang’s roast pork is sold daily and eaten with morning coffee or can be a banquet dish.




32. Chon Buri Buffalo Races : การแข่งขันวิ่งควาย จังหวัดชลบุรี


                     The Chonburi buffalo races are one of the most popular Pattaya festivals, because it combines sportsmanship with entertainment and provides something for everyone, both athletes and spectators alike. There is a lot more to this special festival than just the buffalo race itself, and so there is something for everyone to explore during this season. The Chonburi buffalo races are an annual event held either in the month of October or in November. Jockeys in this race ride ornately and colourfully decorated water buffalos, which are paraded out in floral garlands and elaborate dressings prior to competing in the event.





33. Dok Siew Blooming Festival on Phu Chi Fah : เทศกาลดอกเสี้ยวบานบนภูชี้ฟ้า

34. Phuket International Blues Rock Festival : เทศกาลดนตรีนานาชาติ ภูเก็ต บลูส์ ร็อค เฟสติวัล


           The Phuket International Blues Festival was first held in December 2005, as a festival to showcase the diverse local and regional talent and to show the world that Phuket is capable of staging international music events on a par with the best in the world. The performances feature artists from the region and top off with international acts. The festival is a charity event, with profits being donated to worthy organizations dedicated to Phuket’s children’s education.





35. Naga Fireballs : งานบั้งไฟพญานาค


                           The Naga Fireball festival will be held on the full moon night of 11th lunar month, also the end of Buddhist Lent (October 23, 2012) in Nong Khai province. This fireball phenomenon occurs over takes 1-3 days only at this time of year. What people will witness are mysterious fireballs that erupt from the surface of Mekong River in a relatively short flight before they are extinguished. There is no sound, no smoke, and no fragments from the fireballs have ever been retrieved. Typically the fireballs are visible only after sunset and local legend is that the fire balls come from Naga, a Thai Dragon.
